Lectins are derived from the extracts of plants, animals, viruses and microorganisms and are known to agglutinate red blood cells. These agglutinins can select cell types according to blood group activities utilizing sugar-binding mechanisms.

Lectins form precipitates with glycoconjugates and are useful for identifying or separating oligosaccharides with identical sugar compositions such as galactose, mannose or glucose.

Source:
Pure Ulex europaeus lectin (UEA-I) from gorse, furze

Activity:
<4ug/ml will agglutinate human type O erythrocytes. <0.5ug/ml will agglutinate neuraminidase treated erythrocytes.

Storage and Stability:
Store product at 4°C if to be used immediately within two weeks. For long-term storage, aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing and store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable at -20°C for 12 months after receipt. Dilute required amount only prior to immediate use. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
Caution: FITC conjugates are sensitive to light. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.

Applications
Source:|Furze gorse seeds||Form: |Supplied as a liquid in 0.01M phosphate, 0.15M sodium chloride, pH 7.3, 0.05% sodium azide. Labeled with FITC.||Protein Concentration: ~1mg/ml ||Purity: |Free FITC removed by gel filtration||Activity: |≤4ug/ml will agglutinate human Type O erythrocytes.||≤0.5ug/ml will agglutinate neuraminidase-treated erythrocytes.||FITC:Protein Ratio: |1.0-2.0||Carbohydrate Specificity:|alpha-L-fucose||Inhibitory Carbohydrate:|alpha-L-fucose||Quality Control:|SDS-PAGE||Note: |1. UEA-I contains a high percentage of Ca++ which is required for binding. Treatment of the lectin with EDTA abolishes agglutinating activity. Activity returns with the addition of calcium.||2. Protect FITC conjugate from light by performing protocol in dark room or with foil covering where possible.||Storage and Stability:|For long-term storage, aliquot and store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 6 months after receipt at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer. Light sensitive.
