Syringe filters

Syringe filters

Syringe filters are disposable, membrane-based devices essential for rapid clarification, sterilization, and particle removal in biochemical and analytical workflows. By eliminating particulates and microbial contaminants, they help prevent instrument damage, reduce background interference, and ensure sample integrity prior to downstream applications such as chromatography, molecular analysis, and cell-based assays.

Mechanism and Materials

Syringe filters are designed to attach securely to standard Luer-lock syringes. Upon application of plunger pressure, the sample is forced through the membrane, which retains particles larger than the defined pore size while allowing the clarified filtrate to pass through. Low hold-up volumes reduce sample loss and improve recovery.

Membrane selection depends on the application: nylon membranes are widely compatible with aqueous and organic solvents; PVDF offers low protein binding, making it suitable for biotechnology applications; PTFE is resistant to aggressive chemicals and organic solvents; and PES membranes provide high flow rates, particularly advantageous for media filtration.

Biochemical Applications

In molecular biology workflows, 0.22 μm sterile PES filters are commonly used for buffer and media sterilization or for clarifying PCR products and plasmid preparations prior to sequencing or next-generation sequencing analyses. In proteomics, PVDF membranes are applied to peptide preparation steps before LC-MS analysis. PTFE membranes are frequently employed during lipid and carbohydrate extraction procedures requiring chemical resistance. In clinical diagnostics, syringe filtration of serum or urine samples improves analytical consistency in immunoassays such as ELISA and supports the protection of sensitive instrumentation.
