Astragalus membranaceus (AML), a chinese herb, is isolated from dried roots by successive ammonium sulphate fractionation (1). AML is a monomeric lectin with a molecular weight of 31,5 kDa.
AML is a galactose-binding lectin, which is best inhibited by D-galactose and its derivatives, with pronounced preference for o-nitrophenyl-b-D-galactopyranoside (2).
AML have high thermostability and pH stability. In fact, AML keep it full hemagglutinating properties up to 55 °C for 30 min and in broad range pH from 5,5 to 12,0 (2).
