Agaricus bisporus agglutinin (ABA) is isolated from button mushrooms and purified by affinity column chromatography on a Bovine Submaxillary Mucin (BSM)- Sepharose 4B gel. This tetrameric lectin is composed of four 16 kDa subunits (1).
ABA is a glycoprotein containing fucose, mannose, galactose and glucosamine glycans residues (1).
Moreover, ABA shows affinity towards (2):
ABA agglutinates animal erythrocytes (3) and is known to detect Antigen T (2). It could also be used in order to isolate subclasses of human IgA (4). This lectin could be a potential therapeutic tool for inflammatory autoimmune pathologies (5) or even cancer (6,7).
