The Envelope glycoprotein E (gE) is a member of glycoproteins family of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1). The glycoprotein family contains gB, gC, gD, gE, gI, gH, gL, gG, gK and gM. The extracellular domain of gE has two conserved cysteine-rich regions: C1 and C2,C1 region has been shown to be essential for the function of gE in PRV, the extracellular domain of gE also has a short but highly conserved region (GLYV) located about 60 residues downstream of the C2 region. In epithelial cells, the heterodimer gE/gI is required for the cell-to-cell spread of the virus, by sorting nascent virions to cell junctions. It's reported that BHV-1 anterograde neuronal transport from trigeminal ganglia to nose and eye requires glycoprotein E.
