Measles Virus ELISA Kit

Measles Virus ELISA Kit

Measles virus is a highly contagious RNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family, responsible for causing measles, a disease characterized by symptoms such as fever, cough, conjunctivitis, and a maculopapular rash. Despite extensive vaccination efforts worldwide, measles remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in unvaccinated populations and immunocompromised individuals. Accurate diagnostic tools are critical for early infection detection, epidemiological surveillance, and outbreak control.

The Measles Virus ELISA Kit is an immunoassay designed to detect specific antibodies—typically IgM or IgG—against measles virus antigens in human serum, plasma, or other biological samples. These kits provide a reliable, sensitive, and specific method for qualitative or quantitative measurement of measles virus antibodies to confirm recent or past infection or immunity status.

Test Principle

The ELISA kit utilizes the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay principle to detect measles virus-specific antibodies. Typically, the microplate wells are pre-coated with measles virus antigen or antibody. When patient samples are added, measles-specific antibodies bind the immobilized antigen (indirect ELISA) or captured antibodies bind to measles antigens (sandwich ELISA). After washing off unbound components, enzyme-conjugated secondary antibodies specific for human immunoglobulins (IgM or IgG) are added. Upon adding the chromogenic substrate (commonly TMB), a colorimetric reaction occurs proportional to the amount of bound antibody. The optical density is measured spectrophotometrically at 450 nm.

Applications

  • Detection of measles virus-specific IgM antibodies for diagnosis of acute or recent infection.
  • Measurement of IgG antibodies for assessment of immunity status or post-vaccination monitoring.
  • Epidemiological surveillance and outbreak investigation.
  • Research on immune response to measles virus infection.

Performance

High-quality ELISA kits demonstrate sensitivity and specificity approaching or exceeding 90–100%, comparable to gold standard methods such as the plaque reduction neutralization test. They enable rapid, scalable testing suitable for clinical laboratories and research settings.

Sample Types

Suitable specimen types include serum, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, and cell culture supernatants, with proper sample preparation protocols to ensure assay accuracy.

In conclusion, the Measles Virus ELISA Kit is a crucial tool for timely and accurate diagnosis of measles infections as well as immunity assessment, facilitating effective public health interventions and research into measles virus epidemiology and immunology.
