Calcium carbonate is an endogenous metabolite used as a calcium supplement and antacid. This compound is also used in laboratories as a buffer. It is shown in renal-disease patients with hyperphosphatemia to contain phosphate binding power but it may result in hypercalcaemia or alkalosis.

It is reported that taking calcium carbonate for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in pregnant patients can cause pancreatitis because of excessive calcium indigestion. Other experiments have successfully utilized calcium carbonate as a calcium control in comparison studies.

Applications:

• Calcium supplement

• Antacid

• Buffer
