Alsever’s solution is a citrate–glucose-based anticoagulant-preservative historically developed for maintaining blood cells, particularly erythrocytes, during refrigerated storage. Citrate reduces coagulation by chelating calcium, while glucose provides a metabolic substrate that supports erythrocyte energy metabolism. Blood or erythrocytes stored in Alsever’s solution can retain useful cellular characteristics for experimental applications, although storage progressively produces changes in erythrocyte morphology, metabolism, membrane properties, deformability, and hemolysis.
