Ancymidol is a pyrimidine-type plant growth regulator that primarily inhibits plant cell elongation by suppressing gibberellin biosynthesis, resulting in dwarfing plants and promoting compact plant architecture. Ancymidol is also a cellulose synthesis inhibitor that interferes with cell wall construction, and these properties make it widely used in plant tissue culture, horticultural dwarfing cultivation, and related plant physiology research.

Method: Ancymidol and structural analogues were tested in microsomal cell-free extracts prepared from immature Marah macrocarpus endosperm. Conversion of ent-kaurene through the oxidative steps of gibberellin biosynthesis was measured and compared with whole-pea growth-retardation activity.
Result: Ancymidol was among the most effective inhibitors of cell-free ent-kaurene oxidation. Alteration of the cyclopropyl or pyrimidyl moieties markedly reduced activity, supporting a structure-dependent inhibitory effect. ^[1]
