Principle of the Assay: Catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) is a common antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen. It is widely found in aerobic cells containing cytochrome systems. Hydrogen peroxide is… More details

Application Notes for CAT assay kit
Catalase Activity Assay Kit provides a simple and easy colorimetric assay for the study of catalase activity in a variety of biological samples such as cell and tissue lysates or biological fluids. This assay kit utilizes the peroxidatic function of catalase for measuring catalase activity, based on the reaction of catalase with methanol, with the presence of an optimal concentration of H2O2. The formaldehyde produced can be measured colorimetrically at OD 540 nm. Therefore, the catalase activity present in the sample is proportional to the signal obtained.
Other Notes
Small volumes of CAT assay kit vial(s) may occasionally become entrapped in the seal of the product vial during shipment and storage. If necessary, briefly centrifuge the vial on a tabletop centrifuge to dislodge any liquid in the container`s cap. Certain products may require to ship with dry ice and additional dry ice fee may apply.

NCBI Summary for CAT
This gene encodes catalase, a key antioxidant enzyme in the bodies defense against oxidative stress. Catalase is a heme enzyme that is present in the peroxisome of nearly all aerobic cells. Catalase converts the reactive oxygen species hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen and thereby mitigates the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Oxidative stress is hypothesized to play a role in the development of many chronic or late-onset diseases such as diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancers. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with decreases in catalase activity but, to date, acatalasemia is the only disease known to be caused by this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2009]

Catalase: Occurs in almost all aerobically respiring organisms and serves to protect cells from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Promotes growth of cells including T-cells, B-cells, myeloid leukemia cells, melanoma cells, mastocytoma cells and normal and transformed fibroblast cells. Homotetramer. Belongs to the catalase family.
