It is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas. The most common type of pancreatic cancer, accounting for 95% of these tumours, is adenocarcinoma, which develops in the exocrine component of the pancreas. A minority arise from islet cells and are classified as neuroendocrine tumours. The pancreas, located behind the stomach, plays an essential role in regulating metabolism by producing digestive enzymes and hormones, including insulin.

The symptoms that lead to a diagnosis depend on the location, size and tissue type of the tumour. They may include abdominal pain and jaundice (if the tumour is compressing the bile ducts).
