Tau, also known as MAPT (microtubule-associated protein tau), MAPTL, MTBT1 or TAU, is a 758 amino acid protein that localizes to the cytoplasm, as well as to the cytoskeleton and the cell membrane, and contains four Tau/MAP repeats.
Tau proteins are abundant in neurons of the central nervous system, and function in microtubule assembly and stability and organization and is thought to be involved in the maintenance of neuronal polarity. Defects in Tau functioning and aggregation of these proteins have been clinically linked to a number of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Pick's disease (PiD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), cortical basal degeneration (CBD), and frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17).
