Prostaglandin D2 is a fatty acid compound present in the human body. Elevated levels of localized Prostaglandin D2 has been linked to hair loss and growth inhibition. It has also been seen to contribute to the activity of allergic asthma. Prostaglandin D2 is the major postagrlandin produced by mast cells and is the primary prostaglandin in the brain. It causes vasodilation, induces inflammation, and its presence in hair follicles may be partially responsible for male pattern baldness. Prostaglandin D2 is released during asthmatic and allergic reactions.
