Abaecin [123997-18-2]

Abaecin is a 34-amino-acid, proline-rich antimicrobial peptide originally isolated from the honeybee (Apis mellifera). While it shows minimal direct activity against Gram-negative bacteria alone, 20 µM of abaecin can synergistically potentiate the membrane-permeabilizing effects of pore-forming peptides like cecropin A (at just 0.3 µM) or stomoxyn (0.05 µM). This functional interaction, which causes profound structural damage to bacterial cell surfaces, makes abaecin a valuable tool for research into combinatorial peptide strategies against challenging bacterial strains.
