Cytokines

Cancer immunology is the study of interactions between the immune system and cancer cells (also called tumors or malignancies).
The immune response, including the recognition of cancer-specific antigens is of particular interest in this field as knowledge gained drives the development of new vaccines and antibody therapies. The host was given a better chance at survival if the cancer tissue showed infiltration of inflammatory cells, in particular lymphocytic reactions.
Interleukins are a group of cytokines that were first seen to be expressed by white blood cells (leukocytes= -leukin) as a means of communication (inter-).
